Description Graham Perrin freebsd_committer freebsd_triage 2023-03-14 23:47:17 UTC
ports/plain/LEGAL no longer exists. Two pages bugged:

% rg plain/LEGAL /usr/doc
/usr/doc/website/content/en/copyright/_index.adoc
18:== https://cgit.FreeBSD.org/ports/plain/LEGAL[FreeBSD Ports redistribution restrictions]

/usr/doc/website/content/ja/copyright/_index.adoc
18:== https://cgit.FreeBSD.org/ports/plain/LEGAL[FreeBSD Ports を再配布する際の制限]
%

It's in the Wayback Machine <https://web.archive.org/web/20210513214800/https://cgit.freebsd.org/ports/plain/LEGAL>, but I don't know whether there's something more recent elsewhere.

Should the bugged paragraph be removed, or changed?

LIB File

For starters, should we add a .txt suffix to the filenames, then edit referring pages?

<https://www.gnu.org/licenses/old-licenses/lgpl-2.0.en.html> notes that the GNU Library General Public License has been superseded by the GNU Lesser General Public License.

Let's get someone with suitable knowledge of licencing to advise on this bug.

From <https://www.freebsd.org/copyright/trademarks/>:

> Apple, FireWire, Mac, Macintosh, Mac OS, Quicktime, and TrueType are
> trademarks of Apple Computer, Inc., registered in the United States and
> other countries.

The "Apple Computer, Inc." part might be outdated. Compare with <https://www.apple.com/legal/intellectual-property/trademark/appletmlist.html>, which:

* does use the phrase Apple Inc.
* does not use the phrase Apple Computer

Comment 7 Graham Perrin freebsd_committer freebsd_triage 2023-04-09 11:24:05 UTC
Thanks, however this bug is not entirely fixed.

(In reply to Graham Perrin from comment #1)

If no-one else has a better idea, I'll take the .txt approach …
Comment 8 Sergio Carlavilla Delgado freebsd_committer freebsd_triage 2023-04-09 11:25:36 UTC
I sent an email to portmgr and they told me that removing it would be enough.
It does not have to be replaced with anything.
Problem solved :)

The two GNU-related links described in comment #1 remain, and can not be opened in a web browser.

I sent an email to core@ asking if we can remove the GNU related things.

ports/LEGAL is for tracking the ported software, this mechanism has been removed. However, I feel that we can add the link of https://cgit.freebsd.org/ports/plain/COPYRIGHT , the copyright of the ports collection itself.

I renamed the branch and created pull request 169.

(In reply to Li-Wen Hsu from comment #13)

> … add the link of https://cgit.freebsd.org/ports/plain/COPYRIGHT

Preview (from PR 169:

If this looks OK, I can proceed to include translations of the page.

Thanks, everyone.
