Description ny 2023-08-05 11:01:25 UTC
Please add into WWW of FreeBSD into section "Open issues"
inside FreeBSD 12, FreeBSD 13, FreeBSD 14 short information:
-----------------------------------------------------------

FreeBSD TCP/PPP-server implementation not have classic PPPD anymore.
It is using MPD5 daemon to make TCP/PPP-server.
At same time MPD5 TCP/PPP server is broken starting from FreeBSD 12.
It is still broken in FreeBSD versions 12, 13 and 14.
There is no any alternate solution for PPPD server in FreeBSD now.

Related bug: 272319.

Look like reason of kernel crash is missed part of Netgraph code, which is started after kernel changes in FreeBSD 12.0. MPD5 port work well on FreeBSD 11.

Question is mostly related to bug in new kernel, and not inside MPD5 port. As result FreeBSD 12,13,14 not have any PPP-daemon (like PPPD) at all, only PPP-client exist.

So may be it will be correct to change problem back to "kernel", and not make it "individual ports". As minimum crash is on kernel level, and not inside MPD5.

PR272319 is open for the kernel issue, right?
Comment 3 ny 2023-08-09 06:22:16 UTC
Yes! Kernel crash, that is visible with MPD5 usage.

Reason if this ticket - to add information on freebsd.org WWW itself (inside "Errata/Open issues"), that FreeBSD versions 12,13,14 are not usable now as classic PPPD/TCP server because problematic kernel code.

So people, which need PPPD, will not waste time on its installation or update, and they will use FreeBSD 11 until question will be solved in versions 12,13,14.

Canonicalize assignment.
