Built-in speakers have always worked fine on this laptop, but headphones do not work. https://wiki.freebsd.org/Laptops/Thinkpad_T430s seems to suggest that it should work out of the box, but it does not. I tried playing with hw.snd.default_unit={0,1,2}, but it seems to have no effect. Try to set in /boot/device.hints and reboot hint.hdac.0.cad0.nid21.config="as=1 seq=15"
(In reply to Oleksandr Kryvulia from comment #3) You're awesome... Now how to make this work out of the box? I have experience with buildworld/kern, so if I know what to patch I can test it. Thanks!
(In reply to Jason W. Bacon from comment #4) Forgot to mention, it works with both 3- and 4-conductor headphones and the mic works as well, without the tweak from the wiki link above.
Try to reproduce it on CURRENT and check if problem still exists. Unfortunately I cannot help you with a patch.
Created attachment 244927 [details] Patch for proper headphones assignment in Thinkpad T430
(In reply to Oleksandr Kryvulia from comment #7) Looking at /usr/src/sys/dev/sound/pci/hda/pin_patch_realtek.h, it appears that this patch will also impact T430S, X230, X230T, and T431S. Can we be sure that they all use nid=21, as=1, and seq=15? }, { .models = (struct pin_machine_model_t[]){ PIN_SUBVENDOR(LENOVO_T430_SUBVENDOR), PIN_SUBVENDOR(LENOVO_T430S_SUBVENDOR), PIN_SUBVENDOR(LENOVO_X230_SUBVENDOR), PIN_SUBVENDOR(LENOVO_X230T_SUBVENDOR), PIN_SUBVENDOR(LENOVO_T431S_SUBVENDOR), { } }, .pin_patches = (struct pin_patch_t[]){ PIN_PATCH_DOCK_MIC_IN(25), PIN_PATCH_DOCK_HP(27), // Patch added here // PIN_PATCH_STRING(21, "as=1 seq=15"), { } } }, I'd have to do some research to understand what all these parameters mean. The simple fact that they are grouped together in the .models field might imply that they use identical hardware, but I don't want to assume that given my meager knowledge of audio devices.
I do not have any of this hardware to test, so we cannot be sure.
Intro: Hello there, I am a new user of FreeBSD coming from Windows 10. I don't know much in this area, only started playing with installing open source operating systems and multi-booting this year. Details: Currently I am working on setting up my Thinkpad T430. I have Lubuntu, Windows 10, and FreeBSD 13.2 on it. My speakers work great, tested them last night, but my headphones are not working right, that's why I am here. At first I thought I had no sound, but every so often I thought I heard something, so ran mixer in the shell and adjusted all the groups to 100:100. I could hear something. I was using vlc to test the sound by playing a mp3 file so I played with different output modules that it had listed, didn't change anything. So I boosted the volume through vlc and I could hear the song I was playing faintly. I then tried out the headphones in default lubuntu to make sure the jack and headphones were good. Played a song in vlc, worked perfectly. Summary: Thought I would mention this since I am getting sound on a T430, but very low.
Please post the output mentioned in comment #1

Did you try settings from comment #3?
(In reply to Oleksandr Kryvulia from comment #13) I did not, but going to do that now.
(In reply to Oleksandr Kryvulia from comment #13) Wow, what did that do?! My specific earbuds have a microphone and yeah I can hear myself and music well. If I hold down the mic button on headphone, that turns of the mic. Sure there is some static but wow that was a big improvement, thanks!
(In reply to Captain_Lesbee_Ziner from comment #12) > I tried setting the variable but I don't think it worked: > root@utc:/home/user # sysctl dev.hdac.0.pindump=1 > dev.hdac.0.pindump: 0 -> 0 It worked. The only purpose of this sysctl is to dump messages to the log shown by dmesg.
(In reply to Jason W. Bacon from comment #16) Oh ok, thanks!
I got rid of the static last night! All I had to do was go to the mixer settings and turn off mic and mix. Now the audio is awesome!
