context and log output

I'm running into random strange connection problems. The wifi router
is only some 10 to 12 feet away. The problem only occurs during
boot. Worse, attempting to restart a connection process
(service netif restart) more often than not, results in an immediate
reboot. I encountered this while on releng/14. It appears to me to be
related to i915kms. As both problems only occur when that module is
loaded. I'm now on 15, as Alder lake is only supported on CURRENT.

I'm pasting the relevant info below. But am also adding it as an attachment
for easier reading. I can provide more info as needed/requested.

Thanks.

Are you running drm-61-kmod? Since I updated to it, both iwlwifi and DRM issues are fixed on my Alder Lake ThinkPad. Also, be sure your have the latest gpu-firmware-kmod-intel@aldrlake installed (gpu-firmware-intel-kmod-alderlake-20230625).

I'm using what was in the snapshot I unpacked into
my slices which includes src && ports.
graphics/gpu-firmware-intel-kmod FLAVOR=alderlake
gives me 20230625. iwlwifi came with boot/kernel
from the same snapshot. So I assume it's also
current. It's all from the 18th of this month, if
that helps any.

Thanks.

# pkg info drm-\*
should supply your driver version. You have the latest firmware which is older than drm-61.

There has also been some churn in mesa, so be sure it is current. I believe the last package build should have that as well as everything else you need. Reboot. Do not try unloading i915kms.ko. It will almost certainly panic the system.

Since installing drm-61, I have not had any issues and have functional DRI and video accel (VAAPI) running the modesetting driver. It will run by default if the Intel driver is not installed or you can specify it in your config. You can find the driver used in the Xorg.0.log file, but it is tricky as it tries loading multiple drivers. After possible drivers are listed, look for
"(WW) Warning, couldn't open module intel"

Xorg log with current problematic system

Here's my current running Xorg log.
Any hints?

I'm out of ideas assuming you have confirmed that drm-61-kmod is running. Everything in the log looks just fine. Right driver (modesetting) is running, No real errors in the log. All errors are expected ones.

Well I pulled a down fresh copy of ports about a half hour ago
and deinstalled all the graphics and built anew. So all the
graphics are current as of now for sure. I guess the only way
forward is a fresh copy of src complete with a new kernel with
iwlwifi.
But in the end, it'll all be a craps shoot. I notice similar
problems mentioned in bug #273620. So I guess there's still
some things to iron out.

Thanks for your quick reply and help!

UPDATE. Sending a `service netif restart` will result in being
dropped to debugger, or a hard lock requiring a power button to
power off and an fsck. This is on a stock

Hi Chris,

I used the following script to workaround the `service netif restart` panic. Hope you will find help.

#!/bin/sh

NUM_INPUT=$#
display_usage() {
	echo "This script only supports two input arguments."
	echo -e "\nUsage:\n$0 <mode> <channel>\n"
}
# check whether user had supplied -h or --help. If yes display usage
if [ "$1" = "help" -o "$1" = "-h" ]; then
	display_usage
	exit 0
fi
# if other than two arguments supplied, display usage
if [  $NUM_INPUT -ne 2 ]; then
	display_usage
	exit 1
fi

MOD=$1
CHN=$2
echo "working on bring up the wlan0 and testing 802.$MOD channel $CHN"

kldunload if_iwlwifi && sleep 1
kldload if_iwlwifi && sleep 1

if [ "$MOD" = "11b" -o "$MOD" = "11g" ]; then
	wpa_passphrase "SSID" "****" > /etc/wpa_supplicant.conf
	ifconfig wlan0 create wlandev iwlwifi0 regdomain fcc country US ssid SSID mode $MOD channel $CHN
elif [ "$MOD" = "11a" ]; then
	wpa_passphrase "SSID" "****" > /etc/wpa_supplicant.conf
	ifconfig wlan0 create wlandev iwlwifi0 regdomain fcc country US ssid SSID mode $MOD channel $CHN
fi
sleep 1

ifconfig wlan0 up && sleep 1
ifconfig wlan0 scan && sleep 1
wpa_supplicant -B -i wlan0 -c /etc/wpa_supplicant.conf && sleep 2

dhclient wlan0 && sleep 2

echo "test done!"

Hi Chris,

based on the feedback on the mailing list [1], do we think is is fixed by the latest changes?
