on a brand new Thinkpad T16 newly loaded with 15.0-CURRENT the native keyboard is slow and sluggish -- it is marginally useable -- using an external keyboard via USB connection is normal behaviour -- switching between virtual terminals works okay -- any and all suggestions are welcome since I don't have any idea as to what to try next -- thanks in advance
Is this at the console prompt, or is it in X11 or Wayland?
It is right there in the Subject: line -- "not Xorg/x11 related". I think it is a virtual terminal thing, but I'm likely wrong. It is at console (vt0), and I moved to vt1 to verify without having any console related confusion. I'd just recently loaded (memstick) FreeBSD-15.0-CURRENT-amd64 via June 20th snapshot (I needed the patch from Bugzilla 270707) and I didn't want to bother recompiling the kernel. I figured that 15.0-CURRENT would have the patch needed to get past the initial hang during installation. The native T16 keyboard responds within three or five seconds. This makes it frustrating to type. Logged into root and that worked, but it took forever. Then I plugged in an external USB keyboard, and that worked just great like the native keyboard should have worked. BTW, Bugzilla 270707 also required me to "unset" hint.uart.1.at at boot time, then boot. Later I commented out that line in the /boot/device.hints file.
On Friday, June 28th, I did a memstick image install of 14.1-RELEASE on the same Thinkpad that is involved above. Once I got the system installed (required the hint.uart.1.at fix) the same sluggish native keyboard behaviour with vt0, vt1 and vt2. This rules out the O/S, but may have something to do with the T16 BIOS, or the AMD Ryzen CPU. Using an external USB keyboard worked as expected -- no delays. Maybe this extra information will help you determine what's up.
Turns out that John's patch (see Bugzilla 270707) makes the standard laptop's native keyboard work properly. Thanks to all.
