Samba 4.21 is out: https://wiki.samba.org/index.php/Release_Planning_for_Samba_4.21
I took a look at the release notes. It seems like there are some changes around the handling of the LDB dependency.
Hi Mateusz/ @jhixson@FreeBSD.org How is the samba 4.21 with respect to 0100-Fix-pathref-handling-for-FreeBSD-13plus.patch? I am looking to build samba 4.21 on FreeBSD 13.3 as part of my work. Thanks.
Please note https://bugs.freebsd.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=280533 to avoid duplicate work!
(In reply to sandeep from comment #2) Hey, I've not tested that yet.
The pathref handling in 4.19 has been reverted to the default behavior with fdescfs.
What's about it now?
(In reply to ykla from comment #6) I've not heard of any progress on this PR since the last comment. Are you working on it?
samba 4.22 is out now
(In reply to Jack from comment #8) That's depressing. Either they are moving too fast or we too slow. It took me quite some time to make 4.19 working...I don't consider 4.20 as really usable (IMHO).
(In reply to Michael Osipov from comment #9) yea, 4.20 seems to be broken, i had to revert back to 4.19 and was hoping the newer versions would have better success
(In reply to Jack from comment #10) I wouldn't assume that because there is a huge bunch patches we apply downstream and they all need to reviewed for 4.22. Hard work.
(In reply to Jack from comment #10) That's not going to happen magically. Until all the patches we have are fixed for 4.20 and ported to 4.21, hoping 4.21 would work out of the box is an illusion. Also, IMHO, we are lacking some sort of test suite that can ensure we don't fall into regressions. I have no idea, unfortunately, on how to create it.
I believe the issue might be that most CI systems don't support FreeBSD, such as GitHub, GitLab, and some self-hosted CI platforms. Could the FreeBSD Foundation possibly engage in active and effective outreach?
(In reply to ml from comment #12) Today two new versions of Samba were released (4.21.7 and 4.21.8): this was needed as MS changed the way their DCs work, so any older Samba AD member won't work anymore with a MS DC. I'm not sure Samba 4.20 will ever be patched for this. I've got Samba 4.20 working (see #284623). Perhaps the same could be applied to 4.21? Luckily I don't work with any MS AD DC, but if someone does, it would be interesting if [s]he could try and report back.
(In reply to ml from comment #14) I do have MS AD DC and I can confirm that winbind stopped working after I applied the July 2025 patch to the DC.
(In reply to ml from comment #14) FYI I believe that there is an unofficial patch for 4.20. There's also some discussion re earlier (ie unsupported) versions. 4.22 has landed. I'm closing this ticket as overcome by events since it is unlikely that the FreeBSD Samba Team will spend cycles porting 4.21 at this point.
