The fact that your AP seems to support non-standard VHT on 2.4GHz does not help.  We do not support that and likely will never.

I have no idea. It was created by the 14.1 installation one year ago. Fixed now.

Thanks, there are no 5Ghz BSSIDs in the scan output;  so the real problem here is likely similar to PR 286493;  there are some people not getting (easily) onto 5Ghz or not seeing their 5Ghz SSID despite seeing others.

Yup I can confirm that my FreeBSD laptops with iwlwifi cannot connect to 5G WIFI APs (even on my phone hotspot). I am using wpa_supplicant from base, 14.2-RELEASE AMD64 :-)

I just assumed 5G wifi is not supported, did not really scan list, and release / card is differrent sorry, may be reference but hope to have it working with faster wifi one day, logs below :-)

Ok, you are seeing channel 36 in scan results so 5Ghz is there and working.  What's not supported for you yet is 11n/11ac on the 7xxx.   So you are good and it's unrelated to this problem I assume.

I can confirm that disabling the 2.4GHz band on the router and rebooting it worked for me too. Funnily enough, now I get 225Mb/sec in download and 560Mb/sec in upload.

It rolls back to 2.4 at next reboot. It looks like that if 2.4 is enabled the laptop connects to it and runs @11ng. If 2.4 is disabled it connects to 5 and runs @11ac.

I need to test more but it also looks like that the connection does not work after a suspend/resume cycle and sometimes one "service netif stop - service netif start" if not enough to have it working again.

I can see two lines with the same SSID when 2.4GHz is enabled and only one when 2.4GHz is disabled, so I would say yes.

Anyways, the behavior is the same: if the system boots with 2.4GHz enabled on the router it connects to it and from now on it will never connect to 5 GHz, even if I disable 2.4GHz on the router. If the system boots with only 5GHz enabled on the router all is fine.

The only weird thing I'm observing is that the download speed is less than half than the upload speed (around 215 Mb/sec versus 550 Mb/sec).

As for the suspend/resume thing: I had to add to rc.suspend/rc.resume "service netif stop / service netif start) to have it work, only disabling the wireless interface was not enough because the default route was not set correctly in that case.

I'm not sure this is related, but I also had problems connecting to my 5Ghz network recently on my AX201. It would only connect to 2.4Ghz.

After some experimenting I found that if I specified the 5Ghz network in wpa_supplicant.conf with the exact bssid and a higher priority then it would connect.

Later, I found that using the "Any BSSID" feature on net-mgmt/wifimgr also works, which essentially adds the line "#+ any_bssid" to the network in wpa_supplicant.conf.

As the author of net-mgmt/wifimgr, I'd point out that using "Any BSSID" removes any explicit wpa_supplicant.conf "bssid=" config and adds the comment "#+ any_bssid" (which is only used by wifimgr itself when it next starts up and parses the wpa_supplicant.conf file, so that wifimgr knows to display the "Any BSSID" checkbox as checked).

Essentially, you're left with a wpa_supplicant entry which names the 5Ghz SSID explicitly with any higher priority you also added.

Due to a critical bug (for me at least) in 15.0 I moved back to 14.3, so I can help again if needed.

With that said, I don't know if it's expected but if I specify only the 5ghz frequencies in wpa_supplicant.conf my laptop connects in 5ghz - ac mode at boot time even if 2.4 is enabled on the router.
