Description kaltheat 2025-10-20 10:57:39 UTC
Hi,

after installing latest version signal-desktop-7.74.0_1 from latest-repo for FreeBSD 14.3-RELEASE, signal-desktop will not start anymore, showing this error

Render process is gone: Error: Reason: crashed, Exit Code: 134
    at App.<anonymous> (/usr/local/share/signal-desktop/resources/app.asar/app/global_errors.js:94:7)
    at App.emit (node:events:519:28)
    at WebContents.<anonymous> (node:electron/js2c/browser_init:2:89483)
    at WebContents.emit (node:events:519:28)

Could you fix it? Can I provide somehow additional information (main.log or app.log did not provide further information so far)?

Regards
kaltheat

I'm not able to reproduce on 2 differents computer.
What's your DE? Do you use Xorg or Wayland?
Do you have the same problem with a new Signal profile?
Comment 2 kaltheat 2025-10-23 08:12:01 UTC
Before, I used signal-desktop-7.72.1 with my setup which worked. Looking into the commits, I suspect the new electron-version causes this problem.
I use spectrwm with Xorg and usually run signal-desktop in a jail. Now, I tried to run it directly which works, so I'll have to look into configuration of the jail. Maybe new version of electron needs more permissions ...
Sorry for the noise.

Sorry for posting in a closed topic, but I'm running in the same error msg, without using jails.

This is on a pkgbase 15p1 system I only use when traveling, so I only notice this now. I dimly remember seeing this maybe at the beginning of November, but I didn't care back then. Now I'm mobile for two weeks and really miss signal-desktop.

signal-desktop is on 7.82.0.

I just reinstall all dependencies using

pkg upgrade -f $(pkg rquery '%dn-%dv' signal-desktop|tr '\n' ' ')

but the error is still there.

There is nothing else using electron installed.

Any ideas on how to debug this? On my home system, running 15-stable, it works just fine.

Here is the actual startup:

$ signal-desktop
NODE_ENV production
NODE_CONFIG_DIR /usr/local/share/signal-desktop/resources/app.asar/config
NODE_CONFIG {}
ALLOW_CONFIG_MUTATIONS undefined
HOSTNAME Gucky
NODE_APP_INSTANCE undefined
SUPPRESS_NO_CONFIG_WARNING undefined
SIGNAL_ENABLE_HTTP undefined
userData: /home/mathiasp/.config/Signal
(node:46557) [DEP0180] DeprecationWarning: fs.Stats constructor is deprecated.
(Use `signal-desktop --trace-deprecation ...` to show where the warning was created)

Thanks for any pointers on how to debug this,

Hi,

I installed

  audio/pulseaudio

and it worked again.

Also for the jail-approach I activated mlock:

  allow.mlock;

to get rid of this error:

  WARN MEMORY sqlcipher_mlock: mlock() returned -1 errno=1

I don't know exactly if the dependency is pulseaudio or some package pulseaudio needs as a dependency. Anyways RUN_DEPENDS need to be modified, I think.

This is the same issue as bug #291563

Signal indeed requires PulseAudio now.

I am closing this bug because net-im/signal-desktop was updated to 7.88.0 in commit f47806ed, adding the missing pulseaudio and pipewire dependencies that caused the "Render process is gone" crash. The root cause was identified as Signal now requiring PulseAudio, as noted in the related bug #291563.
