Description Graham Perrin 2025-11-15 18:43:07 UTC
1. Use a UK keyboard

2. in the first screen of bsdinstall (Keymap Selection), select
   United Kingdom

3. continue with installation, be minimal, and when prompted for the
root user's password, enter these four characters:

   ####

4. complete the installation, restart

5. at the login prompt, for root, key the password correctly

Expected:

6. login

Actual result, for the correctly-keyed password:

> Login incorrect
Comment 1 Graham Perrin 2025-11-15 18:45:18 UTC
Keyword 'install', because the first screen of FreeBSD Installer is effectively bugged, however I doubt that modifying bsdinstall will be the best fix for this.
Comment 2 Graham Perrin 2025-11-16 15:02:37 UTC
Not reproducible with .txz sets in FreeBSD-15.0-BETA5-amd64-dvd1.iso.

Reproducible with 15.0-RC1 packages.

Attempted workaround:

1. when prompted for the root password, mistype:

   ££££

2. with an Internet connection:

   pkg install --yes FreeBSD-bsdconfig FreeBSD-console-tools

3. bsdconfig useredit root

4. change the password, correctly type:

   ####

5. save/exit, OK, exit

6. login as root, with a correctly keyed password

   ####

7. success, shutdown -r now

8. login as root, failure, neither of these works:

   ####
   ££££

Re: comment 2, amendments to the workaround.

4. do NOT type correctly, instead MISTYPE the password as:

   ££££

5. save/exit, OK

6. shutdown -r now

7. login as root, success with this password:

   ####
