Description David Muir Sharnoff 1994-12-18 06:00:01 UTC
	1 3C5x9 board(s) on ISA found at 0x300
ep0: 3c5x9 at 0x300 in test mode. Erase pencil mark!
ep0: eeprom failed to come ready.

	What does it mean? Help!

The semantic content I get out of "Erase pencil mark" is:
USE THE SOURCE, LUKE. I will, but it would be nice if the
probe failed with message that gave even the smallest
	clue what was wrong.

(Anyone have any clues they want to pass along?)

How-To-Repeat:
Aquire and assemble the following hardware:

		Motherboard Intel Premier/PCI II
		CPU Intel Pentium 90
		32MB RAM
		PCI SCSI ?? NCR53c810
DISK SEGATE ST32550N (2GB low power barracuda)
		ETHERNET 3COM Etherlink III 3c509B-TP
		VIDEO ATI Ultra Pro

Try to install NetBSD 1.0 or FreeBSD 2.0.

The probe message above comes from FreeBSD 2.0, but NetBSD 1.0,
	produced almost identical messages.

From the man page:

ep0: 3c509 in test mode. Erase pencil mark!  This means that someone has
scribbled with pencil in the test area on the card. Erase the pencil
mark and reboot. (This is not a joke).
