I'm having this same problem during boot of a newly upgraded 5.4-RELEASE_p2 system. Also SMP. I am using gvinum to mirror data filesystems (home) but the root is a normal filesystem.

I was not able to reproduce this on 6.1-RELEASE system (i386 arch). (same test scripts crashed 5.4-RELEASE box within 10 minutes.)
