Description Gian-Simon Purkert 2021-12-07 09:02:10 UTC
Since some time the Website (https://www.freebsd.org/) and Bugs (https://bugs.freebsd.org) are really slow:

-Website needs 4.7sec to load the last element (https://www.freebsd.org/images/25thanniversary.png)

-Bugs needs 6.6sec to load.

Lets compare it to lets say NetBSD:

-https://www.netbsd.org/ 418ms

Having a slow Website is a really bad advertisement for a (normally) fast OS, remember the Amazon 100ms-study ;)

This has been an issue for at least the past 5 weeks, with response time measurements increasing significantly (consistently) at approximately the beginning November (Nov 1-2), and increasing to today.

Today, 16 seconds to load this page:

https://www.freebsd.org/news/newsflash/#2021-12-07:1

It seems to be getting worse.

Not so long today, for me.

13 seconds...not bad, do you have a 56k modem like me? ;)

This page takes somewhere between 22-30+ secs fully load: https://docs.freebsd.org/en/books/handbook/book/
100Mbit, FTTH, Sweden

Not of interest for the total duration, but (for reference only) here's a profile of a 2021-03-01 Wayback Machine capture of the page:

Same page (https://docs.freebsd.org/en/books/handbook/book/) too me ~14 sec 1Gbit, Switzerland.

Was that true, is that still true, for FreeBSD Forums?

Afaik, forums.freebsd.org is hosted in a different place and managed by different people.

Thank you, this seems to be consistent with my experience of no perceptible unusual slowness with FreeBSD Forums, i.e. (strictly speaking) the scope of this bug might be _not_ all FreeBSD sites and services.

Re: duplicate bug 260776, the recent misbehaviours with/affecting Bugzilla are (to me) most remarkable.

Today: as shown in the attached screenshot, the web view of Bugzilla is lagging _considerably_ behind what's received from the bugzilla-noreply@ e-mail address. This is not a local browser cache issue; Control-F5 in Firefox represented outdated content; and an initial view of the same page in Falkon presented the same outdated content.

I'm not complaining; just FYI.

Sorry! Ignore that comment and screenshot. I had a brain fart. The e-mail pictured to the right was intended for me alone, unrelated to Bugzilla.

Since Jan 2th docs.freebsd.org is fast again (<0.2 seconds). Great!

However, www.freebsd.org is still slow with 2.5-3 seconds.

It would be nice to know what had been causing the problem and/or how it was fixed.

The long FreeBSD Handbook still takes some time to load e.g. <https://share.firefox.dev/3r12osJ> however I expect this. As an entire book, it's truly long (compared to some neighbouring books).

Top-level navigation, the three links at top right, is very fast.

----

Without quantifying:

* today, Bugzilla feels _much_ faster.

Since Bugzilla feels so much faster, I visited <https://www.freebsd.org/> and found the main site qualitatively faster, too.

<https://www.freebsd.org/cgi/man.cgi?query=rc.conf&sektion=5&manpath=FreeBSD> (a relatively long man page): around ten seconds <https://share.firefox.dev/3Ganr2n>. Fast enough for me, and I imagine that cgi stuff doesn't fall under the umbrella of this bug.

Thanks to whoever's making the improvements :-)

Bugzilla is faster, however the main-site (https://www.freebsd.org/) is still painfully slows ~10sec.
