After loading FreeBSD's 7.0 i386 install CD and entering 'sysinstall', a Standard Install does not detect any hard disks. Both hard disks in my machine is SATA, and I believe the problem does not occur with PATA disks (even though I do not have one to test). The SATA hard drives run off a SiS 180/181 RAID Controller (even though they are not in RAID mode, and there is no ATA support in the BIOS) which is part of the Asus P4S-800D series. During boot time, I can see the device being loaded/probed. A similar ticket has been opened in the past: kern/87585, however I was not around then to test it. Fix: There are a few references, one of them is a ticket opened in the past: kern/87585 A similar problem cropped into NetBSD, one (possible) solution was: http://archive.netbsd.se/?ml=netbsd-tech-kern&a=2004-11&m=494701 How-To-Repeat: Simply insert any 6.3 or 7.0 FreeBSD install disk into a machine with only SATA hard drives. Load into sysinstall and do a standard install.
State Changed From-To: open->feedback Jaco, can you please try to boot verbose off a live CD and send us the dmesg? Also output of `pciconf -lv' and `atacontrol list' might be useful.
I've the same problem with SiS180. I hope that info in the following post should be enough - http://lists.freebsd.org/pipermail/freebsd-stable/2007-November/038203.html (tested also on 8.0-CURRENT-200802 snapshot). Yuri
