After a reboot (shutdown -r now) USB printer not being detected during device poll. A full power off of printer device and power-on allows device to be detected and attached. FYI.. Problem is not limited to the printer. Also found same problem with a GemPlus smartcard reader that will not poll until unplugged and replugged in after reboot.
Found something interesting. If you add a USB hub between the PC and the devices that are not recognised on boot up, they will be polled correctly after reboot.
