Description Charles Owens 2010-03-22 13:40:03 UTC
(Note: issue _is_ seen with GENERIC kernel. Kernel shown here is the PAE conf with slight tweaks)

On system based on the Intel S5520UR motherboard, during _every_ boot it pauses for about 70 seconds just before any kernel initialization messages appear. We see the loader appearing to complete its work (the kernel is loaded) and
then... it sits. Once it starts up again (with usual kernel-boot
messages) it appears to boot normally (no error messages).

This has been seen also with both FreeBSD 7.1 and 7.2. FreeBSD has always worked fine with other Intel server motherboards we've tested, so this appears to be something specific to this relatively new model.

Attempts have been made to debug the issue with KDB/DDB, but we've been unable to break into the kernel before the hang begins.

Kernel boot log:

Responsible Changed

reclassify, since this sounds particular to one type of motherboard.

It's worth nothing also that we've this exact symptom occasionally when
booting systems running within VMware ESX. There's no pattern that
we've been able to detect as to when it will strike.

The following suggestion was graciously provided by Titus Manea (titus
at buko dot edc dot ro):

    Hi,
    If you didn't solved the delay yet
    just add
    hint.atkbdc.0.disabled="1"
    hint.atkbd.0.disabled="1"
    in /boot/device.hints
    i traced the problem to console init and since these boards do not
    have ps/2 ports it probably takes the kernel some time to figure this out

This is the answer! Titus also pointed out that the symptom affects
amd64 as will as i386.

Thanks Titus!

From my perspective, this ticket may be closed. (I'm assuming that the
observation I made of similar behavior occasionally happening with
VMware is not related).

Sorry for the confusion... please ignore the preceding comment... it
goes with a different PR.

State Changed
From-To: open->feedback

Charles,
can you please test if you still have problem when not disabling the keyboard controller but assigning it to acpi like this:
hint.atkbdc.0.at="acpi"
Comment 7 Eugene Perevyazko 2010-04-28 15:42:11 UTC
I've tested this on 7.2-Stable and
  hint.atkbdc.0.disabled="1"
  hint.atkbd.0.disabled="1"
remove delay but
  hint.atkbdc.0.at="acpi"
does nothing.
