/usr/local/libdata/pkgconfig/vterm.pc contains no valid version:

Version: @VERSION@

The author of libvterm suggests that it should say 0.0. See also https://rt.cpan.org/Ticket/Display.html?id=105364

Sorry for the late reply, here is a proposed patch.
The problem is fixed on the upstream github mirror.
