The new home is https://github.com/vmware/open-vm-tools and there has been a 9.10 release and a 10.0 release since the move.

To the OP... have you tried updating the port to point to github and see if the newer releases build on FreeBSD?

No, I have not, and given the large number of patches in the 9.4.x port I'd expect it not to build without some need to rework one or more of them. 

It also appears that they have resumed distribution of source tarballs via SourceForge, although the operational source repo is at GitHub.
