Description Hécate Irssiainen 2018-03-01 18:47:58 UTC
Section 14.3 of the handbook, namely “Creating and Controlling Jails” seems to be too old, and should reflect more modern ways to install a base system, such as fetching base.txz from the FTP servers rather than the installation .iso.

This wiki could be useful in order to fix this bug: https://wiki.freebsd.org/VladimirKrstulja/Guides/Jails

The url you reference talks about using zfs. That is only way of many ways to to create the content for a non-vnet jails and vnet jails. Having documentation that depends on additional base systems as zfs is not acceptable. Base system is not released with zfs disks as default, ufs is the default and is what any jail directory tree layout should be based on.

Also the handbook talks about ezjail which depends on the jail destination parameters being in rc.conf that has been obsolete since fbsd 10. All the ezjail handbook documentation needs to be removed. The bottom line is no jail port utilities should be mentioned at all in the handbook.

Hi joeb1,
thank you for answering to my report from two years ago.

Yes, the guide I link only contains instructions for ZFS setups, although you'll notice that I in no way imply that it should be the only source of inspiration, so I do not really understand why you are pointing that out.

>The bottom line is no jail port utilities should be mentioned at all in the handbook.

This, unfortunately, highly depends on the release cycle and the actual investment in time and humans to maintain the Handbook (I will spare you my judgement, the general state of the handbook is speaking for itself).
That being said, I could see a link being made to the wiki page that would provide more up-to-date information on that matter, should the Handbook's duties of stability prevent us from editing it too frequently.
I am not in direct contact with the FreeBSD Handbook maintainers and, should they exist, do not think they will ever lay their eyes on this report.

Cheers.

Are these actually the same bug, or related/overlapping?

I'm gonna mark this as overcome by events since the chapter has been rewritten
